Hey Mike, I watched my first video of yours this morning before work. I've watched 3 more today. The first was building a concrete counter top; you said it was your first video. Since then the cool fire pit with compass, the fire table, and now this one. You've inspired me for sure. I'll do the counter top first , and polish it like you did in this vid. Just want to say thanks. I hope the products you used are available at my local home depot in Canada. Thanks. I'll post pics later

My neighbor with his million dollar house had a complementary shed made from the same materials as the house in his back yard. He would never touch a tool if you held his feet to the fire. He tore the shed down to put in a play set. I think his kid played on it maybe twice.

Highly recommend you not use this on the inside of your basement. Great for exterior. You don't want your block sitting it water like that where it can't effloresce. Better to let it dry to the inside than make a situation where the block degrades.

Poured 2 8'x30"x2" countertops. Added flow control to the water first which made it a lot easier on mixing with drill. Also added 2 packs Rapid Set to each bag of mortar to slow down the cure time with having to mix 7 55lb bags and it 85 degree here. Also added some chicken wire type wire to it to be safe with the 8 foot length. Followed the WD-40 and silicone in the video with no issue with sticking. Use my cordless Sawzall to vibrate the form and the bottom and edge came out perfect. Also add black pigment to the mix which work out nice.

about how many bags of concrete is needed for this? I love the idea, but trying to make a guestimation on cost

If using a "cement" mixer; while it is rolling, I like to add a bit of water to make sure the last batch was completely incorporated then I add the gravel to get all things mixing and then the sand and cement. When mixing in batches the measurement is in shovel fulls. Don't forget to wash your tools before it sets.

I know you were making this simple for the people but you may have over simplified because though cement may be 1 ingredient of concrete, cement is not one ingredient. It's made up of limestone, clay, gypsum, calcium, silicon, aluminum, iron and others fed though an assembly process that among other things cooks it at 2000 degrees F. I know, of course Michael that you know this, but this video kind of gives the impression that cement "grows on trees" as it's own element, and I think it's important to be clear as well as entertaining. 😃

Concete is the reactive substance (Portland cement) which functions as a bonding agent and concrete is cement, sand, aggregate and water.

Great, simple, informative video! Saw a couple of the other comments on here! If you wanted, you could probably continue this little explainer series, and go into other things like making concrete stronger (rebar, fiberglass, etc.), what is mortar, etc., and even get into the physics aspects of concrete strength, etc., you know, if you wanted to go that route :)

Michael good video as always. The way i always explain it is that concrete is a homogeneous mix of sand and aggregates held together with a binder. In cement concrete the binder is cement, in coal tar concrete used for road construction, the binder is coal tar. Technically speaking, even a mix of sand, aggregates and epoxy will be an epoxy concrete

Dad taught me this method about 1970. He was a Navy Seabee in WWII on Iwo Jima and elsewhere. He and my brother built a garage when my brother was just starting his excavation business and had no money. They used old bed springs from the dump as rebar. (They did not do dry pour for the garage.) The garage floor has not yet cracked after 40 years.
